The term ‘immune system’ refers to the body’s defence system used to protect itself from disease (Latin for “immune” is Immunis = free, unaffected). Most people do not ‘feel’ their immune system, and regard its existence as self evident. For most of our lives, our immune system – whose function is to fight off viruses, bacteria, fungi and other intruders – works smoothly and successfully.

Only when we get sick with an infection or inflammation does it become clear how important the immune system is to our physical health and how important it is to support and maintain this system.

Those who suffer from a weak immune system will benefit from looking at their behavior, diet, stress levels, and even physical activities for the cause. How can the immune system be strengthened and balanced? Taking care of your immune health is a very important cornerstone of maintaining your physical health for as long as possible.

Our physical defence is a very subtle system. It includes cells and proteins that have the function of maintaining the body with its organs and structures. The immune system has various strategies for repelling outside intruders. On the one hand it has mechanical barriers, (the skin or mucous membranes). On the other hand, there are cells (i.e. granulocytes or lymphocytes) which work to render viruses and bacteria harmless. In addition, the body has proteins that act as messengers or as a defence against pathogens.

This sensitive system can be disrupted in its operation by a variety of external influences. These include dietary toxins that enter the body which may include processed foods, sweets, soft drinks, alcohol, and nicotine. Altogether, these items can weaken the organism and result in acidification. This also affects the immune system.

Immune boosting strategies: How can the immune system be boosted? Here are some basic guidelines to consider:

– Sufficient sleep (6 to 8 hours per day);

– Regular exercise (3 to 4 times per week of aerobic exercise, outdoors in nature);

– Stress reduction with yoga, relaxation training, alkaline baths, massages, dry and wet brushing;

– Listen to your heart and soul;

– Good hydration (with 2 to 3 litres per day of water or herbal tea)

– Avoid nicotine, alcohol;

– Alternate hot and cold showers to improve blood circulation on a regular basis;

– Take sauna or steam baths;

– Avoid drugs (especially those that destroy white blood cells such as painkillers, anti-depressants, antibiotics, beta blockers, etc.)

– Avoid fatty or highly processed foods;

– Enjoy an alkalinizing diet, rich in vitamin A, C, and iron. Eat foods that promote the production of white blood cells, including broccoli, kale, carrots, garlic, spinach, wheat germ oil, and ginger.

Editor’s note: We were amazed when we heard that Margarete Jentschura still visits her family owned health food store in Muenster, Germany every day – at 103 years old! So we asked her grandson, Roland Jentschura (MSc), how she manages this.
 
Vitality magazine: Hello Roland Jentschura; by now your grandmother is 103.5 old. Yet she still visits her health food store even at this advanced age. What is her story?
 
Roland Jentschura: My grandmother worked at our family-owned health food store until the age of 100, and then retired at 101. But she still goes there almost every day to talk with customers. As to the reasons for her remarkable longevity, one of her secrets is that she walks a lot! During her career as the store manager, she walked about one kilometer to the store, and one kilometer back, twice a day. She also walked a lot in the store. And she even enjoyed walking in her spare time. She walked every day and all day long! Walking ensures good blood circulation, which in turn supplies cells and tissues with oxygen and nutrients while removing acidic metabolic waste products. Regular movement considerably promotes lifelong regeneration. Today, many people tend to stand or sit on their way to and from work. But grandmother’s philosophy is: “The longer you sit, the sooner you quit – life!” Regular movement is important for a long life. My grandmother also did daily weight-bearing exercises.

“Alkalize or Die”

Sorry for this shocking, powerful headline. And it is true on a chemical level. Our blood must be always alkaline otherwise we die instantly.
Nevertheless some MDs claim that “The Alkaline LifeStyle” is nonsense because the body itself has many different pH-levels and is able to buffer any diet (acid or alkaline).
Yes, the body is able to buffer any diet for a certain amount of time. But it comes with a cost to it.
Of course our body, the biochemical miracle, is able to deal with for instance a strong black coffee (which has a 10.000 times more acidic pH-level that our blood) and it is able to buffer it. But buffering actually means that the body is neutralizing the acidity of the coffee in a chemical reaction using organic minerals out of our mineral deposits (bones, skin, scalp and teeth).
So in living the “I do not care what I eat/drink” acidic life style with no exercise and lots of stress I basically long term exploit my body via demineralization which causes lots of diseases.
I love the simplistic comparison of your body with a bank account: Either you choose to deposit youth and health via alkaline life style (green, mineral rich diet/exercise/good sleep/positive attitude) or you deploit your health via acidic life style.

With the warmer temperatures it is good to integrate juicing and smoothies to your diet. Today we want to focus on juicing.

If you do not own a juicer, a “middle class” juicer for $100 will do the trick.

Juicing allows vitamins, minerals, vital substances and nutrients to go straight into the bloodstream, without the body having to expend energy to break down food.

There are many health benefits of drinking freshly juiced fruits and vegetables, and it’s a great way to add nutrients from the fruits or vegetables that you normally wouldn’t eat. Fruit and vegetable juices retain most of of the vitamins, minerals and plant chemicals (phytonutrients) that would be found in the whole versions of those foods. These nutrients can help protect against cardiovascular disease, cancer and various inflammatory diseases, like rheumatoid arthritis. Valuable compounds called flavonoids and anthocyanins are abundant in a variety of fruits and vegetables and protect against cellular oxidation, which comes from everyday cellular maintenance and is exacerbated by exposure to acids and toxins.

Here is our favorite detox juice:
4 large kale leaves (any variety)
3 sticks of celery (including leaves)
1 cucumber
1 handful of watercress or rocket (arugula)
½ inch of fresh root ginger
Squeeze of 1/2 fresh lemon
300ml of filtered, preferably ionized water

Instructions
1. Thoroughly wash all ingredients and then chop the celery into small pieces
2. Juice everything
3. Enjoy!

Why do we need to be alkaline??

For millions of years, human beings lived as hunter-gatherers; a few hours of work each day devoted to gathering and preparing food, and the rest playing with our children. As a result, we got plenty of fresh air, exercise, and a real sense of community. We can learn from the way indigenous people live with respect for, and in harmony with, nature.

In contrast, our acidic North American lifestyle, rather than creating balance in our lives and our health, prevents the possibility of an alkaline body. Too much acid-generating food and drink, too much stress, and not enough fresh air and exercise – these factors create an acidic versus an alkaline body, and are the main factors which throw off the natural balance in our bodies.

On a purely physical level, we are just like the animals. Do animals in their natural environment eat junk food, drive cars everywhere, and get really stressed out at day jobs? No way! They are out in the fresh air running and jumping, eating fresh food, and otherwise relaxing. Everything they do contributes to an alkaline body and vibrant health.

We humans, on the other hand, eat and drink many acid-forming processed foods like coffee, pop, and white flour products. Instead of walking or biking to work, we drive, and many of us spend hours in our cars each day. We ride the elevator instead of taking the stairs, and our jobs are often sedentary and stressful. Watching TV in the evenings can be intense, and also very stimulating. This kind of living creates an acidic body.

Three Step Program to Alkalize the Body

By making a commitment to change, we can make different choices that will bring balance to our lives; it is not that hard once you’re ready. Changing your diet to consist of 70% alkalizing foods and beverages can make a huge difference to your health.

Dr. Jentschura from Germany has developed a very powerful and easy 3-step program to alkalize the body: 1) alkaline purification, 2) cleansing, 3) generation.

4. Alkaline RECIPES FOR LUNCH

Quinoa-Olive Salad
(Makes 4 servings)

2 cups quinoa
4 cups vegetable broth
1 small onion
3 teaspoons olive oil
3 tomatoes, cubed
2 carrots, shredded
100 g black or green olives
pepper and seasoned salt

Wash the quinoa seeds with hot water, let them drip off, then lightly stew them in 1 teaspoon oil. Stir in the vegetable broth and let simmer for about 15 minutes. Let cool down and mix with vegetables and 2 teaspoons olive oil. Season according to taste.

Mixed Salad with Warm Mustard Vinaigrette
(Makes 4 servings)

½ head endive
100 grams arugula
1 ripe avocado
2 Tbsp olive oil
2 teaspoons sesame seeds
1 Tbsp lemon juice
2 teaspoons coarse mustard

Tear, wash and dry the salad. Peel the avocado, cut into thin slices and mix with the salad in a bowl. Slightly roast the sesame seeds in 1 tablespoon oil. After the seeds have cooled down, stir in the lemon juice, olive oil and mustard. Pour the dressing over the salad immediately.

This is tasty with potatoes boiled in their skins.

RECIPE FOR DINNER

Those who suffer gastrointestinal problems after dinner could try eating little or no cereal, fruits, raw vegetables, or salad after 8 pm. The liver and digestive tract are already resting during this time; for this reason, the above mentioned foods cannot be macerated adequately and they start to ferment overnight. As a result, toxic metabolic waste develops, which burdens the liver and intestines. To avoid this, eat instead vegetable soups or stewed vegetables with potatoes, millets, or quinoa.

If weight reduction is a priority, try to avoid foods high in carbohydrates in the evening; this can really boost the burning of fat overnight. Also helpful is eating a large serving of vegetables and a small amount of protein – cheese, fish, or meat instead of potatoes, bread, and the like.

SIMPLE & QUICK DINNER RECIPE: Oven Vegetables

Preheat oven to 350.

Choose seasonal vegetables like pumpkin, carrots, eggplant, zucchini, bell pepper, potatoes, and mix them according your taste.

Use some organic olive oil, pepper, and seasoned sea salt or A.Vogel salt.

Bake for 5-10 minutes and enjoy!
